Today marks the review embargo for Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator, and while we at Pure Xbox have been spending some time with it, we haven't played enough yet to offer a full verdict. However, after a few hours with the game, it’s clear that it’s very much in line with what you’d expect from the developer behind Police Simulator: Patrol Officers (2022). It’s a game that strikes a balance between being fun and addictive in many ways, while also offering moments of unintentional humor and some technical flaws.
The gameplay loop of Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator has you stepping into the shoes of an emergency paramedic. You'll go on shifts, responding to a variety of urgent situations—everything from anxiety attacks to burn victims. Your goal is to get to the scene quickly, provide the appropriate medical care in your ambulance, and then transport your patient safely to the hospital.
One of the standout aspects of the game is the ambition behind it. Developer Aesir Interactive has provided a wide range of tools for dealing with medical emergencies, such as the ability to administer various types of intravenous medication. It can be overwhelming at first, so be sure to dive into the in-game "handbook" to familiarize yourself with your options.
Much like in Police Simulator, you’ll interact with patients and witnesses to gather information about the situation. Conducting tests and determining the right course of action adds to the challenge. The game becomes a juggling act, as you prioritize which patient needs the most immediate attention (only one patient can be transported at a time), what treatments need to be administered first, and how quickly you can execute everything before the situation worsens. At times, the pressure is intense and the stress is real!
But it’s not all serious business. The game also has a hilarious side. Navigating through busy traffic can be a nightmare when cars won’t make way, maneuvering stretchers is awkwardly clunky, and the way patients behave or react with odd dialogue adds a touch of absurdity. There's also the potential for ridiculous scenarios, where you end up treating a patient with completely the wrong remedy, resulting in laugh-out-loud moments (think Mr. Bean).
To get the most enjoyment out of Ambulance Life, you’ll need to approach it with the right mindset. Much like Police Simulator, the game isn’t striving for full-on realism but instead delivers an enjoyable experience if you’re willing to embrace its quirks. It’s not trying to be as technically detailed as something like Microsoft Flight Simulator, and that’s perfectly fine! It offers fun, despite some repetitive gameplay and bugs along the way.
The game features a large, well-designed map, which expands as you progress and unlock new districts, each with their own emergency scenarios. For a non-AAA developer like Aesir Interactive, the game looks fairly decent, and we were genuinely impressed by the ambition behind both the presentation and the gameplay.
However, Ambulance Life still has a long way to go. The game needs more polishing, with issues like pop-in, poorly transitioning or low-quality cutscenes, occasional glitches, and frame rate drops that can’t be adjusted on Xbox Series X.
If we had to score Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator at this point, it would land at a solid 6/10—"Not Bad." As mentioned, we’ve only spent a few hours with it, but it's exactly what we expected: a familiar experience for fans of Police Simulator, though not just a reskin. The game delivers the same addictive “just-one-more-shift” appeal but also shares the same pitfalls, with its bugs and absurd moments that may either delight or frustrate players.
